IBS Treatments
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder. Individuals with IBS often experience recurring abdominal pain or discomfort, accompanied by changes in bowel habits such as diarrhoea, constipation, or a combination of both. The symptoms can vary in intensity and may be triggered or worsened by stress, certain foods, and hormonal changes. Psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression can also trigger or exacerbate symptoms.
There is a notable body of research suggesting that hypnotherapy can be effective in managing the symptoms IBS, particularly for improving pain and discomfort. The use of hypnotherapy for IBS has gained recognition and support from various medical organisations and experts. The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK have included hypnotherapy as a recommended treatment option for individuals with IBS who have not responded to conventional treatments.
Numerous clinical trials and research studies have investigated the effects of hypnotherapy on IBS symptoms. Many of these trials have reported significant improvements in IBS symptoms, including reduced pain, bloating, and bowel movement irregularities.
Hypnotherapy for IBS involves techniques that aim to influence the brain-gut interaction, helping to regulate gastrointestinal functions. This aligns with the growing understanding of the strong connection between the brain and the gut in IBS.
In our sessions I would also look to address the psychological aspects of IBS, such as anxiety and stress, which often exacerbate the symptoms. By promoting relaxation and stress reduction, hypnotherapy can contribute to improved overall well-being. I was diagnosed with IBS aged 14 therefore, understand the stress, anxiety, discomfort and embarrassment that this can bring.
It is important to note that while the evidence is promising, hypnotherapy you should consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment approach is advisable, as they can help determine if hypnotherapy is appropriate for your specific condition and needs.
